Board game card sizes, with sleeve allowances

Five sizes cover most of the cards on a game shelf. Here they are in millimeters and inches, with what a sleeve adds and how thick a deck really is.

Find your card size, step by step

You need: a ruler with millimeters

  1. Take one card out of its sleeve. Measure a bare card, not a sleeved one. The sleeve allowance is added separately.
  2. Measure the short side. Lay the ruler across the short side and read to the nearest half millimeter. This is the number that decides the tray, because cards stand on their short edge.
  3. Measure the long side. Read the long side the same way. It sets how tall the tray is.
  4. Match it to the table. Find the row with the same short side, or the next size up. If you sleeve the cards, or plan to, choose the sleeved option.

The five common sizes

These are the sizes built into the card tray and the card divider set. Width is the short side.

Inches are rounded to two places. If you measure in inches, multiply by 25.4 to get millimeters.

Other sizes, and which tray to pick

The tray only grips the cards across their short side, because cards stand on edge in a single row. The long side only sets the tray's height, which is 60 percent of the card so your fingers can reach the deck. That means a card that is not on the list works fine in the next size up by width, as long as the difference is a few millimeters.

If your card is wider than the size you were going to choose, even by half a millimeter, go up a size. A card that is too wide does not go in.

What a sleeve adds

Sleeves are sold by the card size they hold, and the sleeve itself is two to three millimeters larger each way. Our trays allow 2 mm for the sleeve on both sides of the card, then leave 3 mm of play each side instead of the 1 mm we leave for bare cards. In practice:

  • Unsleeved standard card, 63.5 mm wide: tray cavity 65.5 mm across.
  • Sleeved standard card: 63.5 plus 2 for the sleeve, plus 3 each side, so a 71.5 mm cavity.

That extra room is deliberate. Sleeved decks bow a little, and a sleeve's open end catches on a tight wall.

How thick is a deck

Capacity is about the stack, not the card face. We size the trays with these figures, which are estimates from published card and sleeve thicknesses, not measurements of your cards:

CardsBare stack, aboutSleeved stack, aboutStandard tray outside, bareStandard tray outside, sleeved
5017 mm23 mm69 x 22 x 54 mm75 x 28 x 56 mm
10033 mm45 mm69 x 38 x 54 mm75 x 50 x 56 mm
15050 mm68 mm69 x 55 x 54 mm75 x 73 x 56 mm
20066 mm90 mm69 x 71 x 54 mm75 x 95 x 56 mm

Outside sizes are width across the card, length along the stack, and height, rounded to the millimeter, for the standard size. Euro trays are about 4 mm narrower and 2 mm taller, mini trays 20 to 23 mm narrower and 12 to 15 mm lower, and tarot trays about 6 mm wider and 19 mm taller. Each tray has 2 mm of spare length so the last card does not have to be forced in.

Thick card stock and premium sleeves run thicker than these figures. If you are near a capacity line, take the next one up.

Picking the tray, step by step

  1. Measure a bare card's short side. Match it to the first table, or the second for odd sizes.
  2. Decide sleeved or unsleeved. If you might sleeve later, choose sleeved now; bare cards in a sleeved tray are loose but usable, the reverse is not.
  3. Count the cards that live together and pick the capacity at or above that count.
  4. If several decks share one tray, add a card divider set in the same size. The dividers stand a few millimeters taller than the cards with tabs in three offset positions.

Questions

My cards are 57 x 89 mm. Which size do I choose?

That is the narrow size often called bridge size. Choose Euro, unsleeved. Euro is 59 mm wide, so a 57 mm card has about two millimeters of extra play each side, which is still a neat fit. Standard would leave about four.

Do sleeves really add two millimeters?

Close to it. Most sleeves are cut two to three millimeters wider and longer than the card they are named for. Our trays add 2 mm to the card for the sleeve and then leave 3 mm of play each side instead of 1 mm, so standard, premium and most matte sleeves all fit.

What about double sleeved cards?

Width still fits, because the inner sleeve is smaller than the outer one. The stack is thicker, so pick the next capacity up from your card count.

Why is there no square card option?

Square cards around 70 x 70 mm stand nearly as tall as they are wide, so a tray that grips them on edge would hide them. Use a compartment of the custom box insert sized to the deck instead, with the cards lying flat.

How many cards are in 100 mm of deck?

Roughly 300 bare cards or 220 sleeved ones, using the 0.33 mm and 0.45 mm per card figures below. Real cards vary with the stock, so treat every capacity as an estimate.
