Lunar New Year gifts and decor

The lunar new year turns on the second new moon after the winter solstice, so the date moves each year. In 2027 it falls on Sat, Feb 6, 2027 and opens the year of the Fire Goat. Families clean the house before the first day to sweep out the old year, hang red for luck, gather for a reunion dinner on the eve, and hand red envelopes to younger relatives. The fifteenth day ends the season with lanterns.

It is celebrated well beyond China: Vietnamese families mark Tet, Korean families Seollal, and communities across Southeast Asia keep their own customs. Red and gold are shared almost everywhere, and the fu character, often hung upside down so that luck "arrives", is one of the most familiar motifs.
